- Private leading-edge research with, in particular, Europe's leading research centre belonging to the Sanofi -Recherche  group (900 people) and Ophtalmology laboratories: Chauvin - Bausch & Lomb, ABX-Horaiba, IBM - Grid Computing, Idenix Pharmaceuticals, Dell.

- Those scientific sectors involving chemistry, semiconductors and computing have attracted a whole host of researchers, including internationally famous specialists.

- The biotechnologies sector is also growing rapidly with the emergence of companies specialising in the field of health, agronomy and the environment. With major institutions in contact with some twenty higher education and research establishments working in the food industry sector, particularly the tropical and Mediterranean sectors, Montpellier plays a major international role in North-South development and cooperation.
