The Aude region

CarcassonneAude is the home of the Cité de Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi*. It is one of Antiquity's ancient crossroads, linking Aquitaine to the Mediterranean coast. On either side of the Lower Aude Valley, the department contains a wide variety of landscapes, from the dark, brooding hills of the Montagne Noire in the east to the long sandy beaches of the coast and the colourful, sun-drenched vineyards of the Corbières.

Prehistoric remains (in Tautavel), Gallo-Roman remains (the Cit de Carcassonne's first ramparts), feudal dynasties and Catharism have all left traces of their presence, enriching the region's natural heritage with an immensely powerful cultural and artistic one.
